Does Ammonia Take Wax Off Vinyl Floors?

New wax makes your vinyl floor shine, but old wax accumulates dirt and makes the floor look prettier. That is why you should clean old wax frequently — and the more frequently you do it, the easier the job. Ammonia is an effective wax remover, particularly when mixed with light detergent.

Wax Removing Solution

Ammonia is a strong cleaner, and it is important to not forget never to blend it with chlorine products, because the combination produces toxic gases. It effectively cleans old wax off of plastic when combined with hot water, but to boost its effectiveness, mix ammonia with laundry detergent. An effective cleaning solution consists of 1/2 to 1 cup of ammonia and one cup of laundry detergent in a gallon of warm water.

Cleaning Procedure

If the wax buildup isn’t intense, you should be able to remove it with a sponge mop. Pull the mop frequently in the cleaning solution, and modify the solution if needed. If the ground has a lot of layers of wax, you might need to wash with a brush and mop up the deposits. Make sure you wash the floor with clear water and allow it to dry thoroughly prior to rewaxing.
